With the recent signing of A.J. Burnett (RHP, PHI), the Phillies are now looking for a fifth starter. Back in January, the fourth and fifth spots appeared headed for a competition. Now the front four are Cliff Lee (LHP, PHI), Cole Hamels (LHP, PHI), Burnett, and Kyle Kendrick (RHP, PHI). Roberto Hernandez (RHP, PHI) is the favorite to take the final rotation slot.

Hernandez posted a 3.53 xERA, 6.7 Dom, 2.3 Ctl, 53% GB% and 91 BPV in 151 IP last year. Prior to that, he hadn’t sported an xERA better than 4.00, a 2.0+ Cmd or BPV above 49 since 2007. A closer look reveals that his skills slipped a bit in the second half. His strikeout rate dropped and his walk rate climbed, resulting in a decline from a 3.5 Cmd in 90...
