Year-to-year player performance does not inherently follow a smooth trend for any player. Rather, surges are followed by declines, and declines by surges, even as overall growth may still occur. These swings are constant and far wilder than we'd care to admit.

There is one thing missing with most standalone ranking systems. Projected player rankings need to be benched against the marketplace. It doesn't matter where I rank Carlos Beltran. It matters where I rank Beltran in comparison to where he is likely to go in my draft.
