With Edwin Dïaz out for the 2023 season, the Mets must suddenly decide the question of who closes games. Initial discussion has centered around David Robertson and Adam Ottavino. Robertson is currently projected to get the majority of the Mets’ saves. He did save 20 games in 2022 and has 152 saves in his career, but he’s 38 and comes with an F health record. The 37-year-old Ottavino has 33 career saves in 12 MLB seasons, and he’s seldom during those 12 seasons been viewed as “the guy”. A third veteran option is 35-year old Brooks Raley who had six saves with Tampa in 2022, and as a lefty, he might as a minimum, see some match-up save opportunities, but he’s unlikely to become the primary closer.
