In 2019, the Cardinals were one of the most aggressive teams on the basepaths, attempting 0.88 steals per game. That was good for the fourth-highest average in the league. In 2020, their attitude seemingly changed quite a bit, as the team averaged only 0.48 steals per game (22nd-highest in the league). In offseason comments, manager Mike Shildt stated that playing through the pandemic impacted the team’s baserunning the most of all areas of the game. Logically, this makes sense given that the Cardinals were among the hardest-hit teams by the pandemic, affecting both their depth and schedule.
