Through 48 games, the Red Sox had attempted 41 stolen bases, a pace that would give them 138 chances on the season, 31 more than a year ago. The added aggressiveness is perhaps understandable, as the team looks for additional ways to generate offense after the retirement of DH David Ortiz.

The main beneficiary thus far has been Xander Bogaerts (SS, BOS), who, while lagging a bit in the power department, is well on his way to top his previous high in stolen bases of 13. Bogaerts has also done his part to keep the steal signs coming: He hasn’t been caught in eight attempts. As a result, Bogaerts may wind up earning his auction day value, just in a manner in which his owners did not anticipate, with ample speed compensating...
