The Tigers got a little rotation help as Jordan Zimmermann (RHP, DET) has rejoined the staff after rest and rehab for his sprained UCL—an injury that, at least for now, won’t require additional surgery. He will earn $25 million in both 2019 and 2020, after which he will be a free agent, and with minimal salary obligations entering the 2021 season—aside from Miguel Cabrera (DH, DET) who is signed through 2023 with two option years—Detroit will have some powerful payroll flexibility in the coming seasons.

Coinciding with Zimmermann’s return, the Tigers optioned starters Ryan Carpenter (LHP, DET) and Gregory Soto (LHP, DET) back to Triple-A, leaving them short-staffed at the major league level for the moment. This could have...
