Despite posting a 2.30 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 32 saves and a 132 BPV in 70 IP a year ago, A.J. Ramos (RHP, MIA) will battle Carter Capps (RHP, MIA) for the closer job this spring. At first glance, this might be a rather surprising development. However, it actually makes perfect sense.
Ramos was stellar in his first season as a closer, but some cracks in the armor began to appear in the second half. Consider that the 29-year-old boasted a 1.19 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, 2.69 xERA, 47% GB%, 2.4 Ctl, 62% FpK% and 158 BPV in the first half before amassing a 3.58 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 3.58 xERA, 40% GB%, 4.4 Ctl, 57% Fpk% and 102 BPV in the second half.
