PT TOMORROW: AL WEST—Fletcher with a tenuous hold at LAA SS

Who gets most of the early playing time from the shortstop spot remains up in the air, but we still lean toward David Fletcher (SS/2B, LAA) and ... Giovanny Urshela (3B, LAA)? Earlier in the preseason many observers had Fletcher and Luis Rengifo (2B/3B, LAA) as the primary competitors here, but even with his 2022 offensive breakout, Rengifo's defensive work was sub-par, particularly in his 19 games at SS. If you're into reading tea leaves, Rengifo's appearance at SS this past Tuesday was his first of the preseason—including with WBC Venezuela, where he was seen playing LF off the bench. Barring a last-minute trade, Rengifo currently projects as a frequently used multi-position utility piece for the Angels.
