As the trade deadline approaches, the Red Sox Jon Lester (LHP, BOS) is one of two American League East premium left-handed pitchers—David Price (LHP, TAM) is, of course, the other—at the forefront of speculation. At least one factor in the two teams’ decision-making processes are their assessments of their 2014 playoff chances. Ironically enough, the two teams battled in Tropicana Field over the weekend, and the results may help push Lester out of Boston, while Price stays put in Tampa.

The Red Sox already signaled at least some willingness to sell off assets with the trade of Jake Peavy (RHP, SF). As noted by Playing Time Today’s Matt Dodge, Allen Webster (RHP, BOS) will get the first crack at Peavy’s rotation slot....
