While it is never wise to put too much stock in spring performances, sometimes they can provide a helpful nudge in a direction you may have been going anyway. Case in point: Wei-Yin Chen (LHP, BAL), whom analyst Ryan Bloomfield called in the Baseball Forecaster “a stable cog who is getting better.”
Now comes word that there may be an added reason to forecast improvement for Chen in 2015: a new grip on his changeup, taught to him by Orioles special assignment pitching instructor Ramon Martinez. Described as resembling a palm ball, the pitch is designed to provide more deviation in velocity from Chen’s fastball than his circle-change.
