When the book is finally closed on the Red Sox 2019 season, the predominant storyline is likely to be about the pervasive problems with its pitching staff, both in terms of starters who got injured or underachieved and relievers who were not up to the challenge when management decided to do little to fill the void left by the departure of closer Craig Kimbrel (RHP, CHC).

On the bullpen front, however, the picture may not be quite as bleak as it seems, and it will be interesting to see the degree to which the front office doubles down on trying to find an answer internally rather than expend serious resources to bring in another late-inning alternative, particularly where the free agent market may be quite barren, unless
