Jordan Montgomery (LHP, NYY) seems intent on making his removal from the rotation as difficult as possible for the Yankees.

On Aug. 5, Montgomery yielded only one run and three hits (0 BB, 7 K) over five innings in a no-decision against the Indians. The start was part of what reportedly was planned to be a one-game reprieve after the Yankees acquired both Jamie Garcia (LHP, NYY) and Sonny Gray (RHP, NYY) before the trade deadline, designed to provide an extra day of rest to Luis Severino (RHP, NYY) in the midst of his breakout season.

Given that Montgomery’s skills (4.26 xERA, 101 BPV) match or exceed Garcia’s (4.27 xERA, 65 BPV), Garcia’s acquisition might look redundant at first blush. But as Severino’s extra rest day...
