Mired in a 6-for-45 slump in June, Justin Smoak (1B, TOR) was given the day off June 17. Smoak has been unable to sustain the contact rate that helped fuel his breakout season in 2017, though there is no indication those days off will become more frequent. Indeed, the Jays hold a reasonable, $6 million option on his services for 2019, so he is likely part of the team’s 2019 plans, something that cannot be said for many on Toronto’s roster.

Nonetheless, in the short term, Smoak’s playing time may see a bit of a squeeze. Toronto would no doubt like to convince a playoff contender to pony up some manner of prospect in a trade for Curtis Granderson (OF, TOR), which means getting Granderson into the lineup against RHP, even...
