Thales of Miletus was a remarkable chap. He is often credited as the first Greek philosopher, breaking with traditional mythological thought to explain the world’s phenomena with theories involving the physical, natural world. His great philosophical breakthrough? Everything in existence is composed of a single, irreducible substance (interesting, go on), and that substance is water (d’oh!).
The reason Thales is so important isn’t because his conclusion was correct; it’s because his process was sound. That’s the beginning of science, folks. Reasoned thinking.
