One approach to identify potential surgers is to split their skills and analyze the extremes to determine if the player could be a tweak away from finishing strong. As we did with starting pitchers last week, looking at stats and skills with the bases empty compared to with runners on base is one way to do this.
Our research shows that batting average is significantly higher when runners are on base:
The drivers appear to be twofold: batters have a higher hit rate (BABIP) and better plate discipline with runners on base:
