In something of a departure from their approach in recent seasons, the Diamondbacks are not currently carrying three catchers on their 25-man roster, having put Blake Swihart (C/OF, ARI) on the IL and sending John Ryan Murphy (C, ARI) to Triple-A late last week.

That leaves left-handed Alex Avila (C, ARI) and right-handed Carson Kelly (C, ARI) as the two options behind the plate. Avila, still just 32, missed 41 games earlier this year with a quadriceps injury, but had logged 13 starts heading into Wednesday’s action, and seems to be operating without any limitations.
