PT TOMORROW: NL East—Starting rotation questions abound

New York Mets

Jenrry Mejia (RHP, NYM), Rafael Montero (RHP, NYM) Jacob deGrom (RHP, NYM) and top prospect Noah Syndergaard (RHP, NYM) will compete for the fifth starter job this spring. Mejia and Montero would appear to be the favorites. Syndergaard, the team’s top prospect, seems likely to spend at least a couple months in the minors before getting the call. The team hopes to sign a veteran starter to a non-guaranteed contract and have him compete with the youngsters for the job.

Mejia is a very intriguing option. The 24-year-old has battled injuries throughout his career, including 2011 Tommy John surgery, but he has shown flashes of dominance (160 BPV, 2.65 xERA, 8.9 Dom, 1.3 Ctl, 58% GB% and 12.1% SwK% in 27.1 IP last year).
