The Cardinals have spent the early portions of the season trying to sort out the back end of their rotation, but have had little success. Only one time in 15 games have they had a starter reach the sixth inning (h/t to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Dispatch for the stat), which has put a lot of early strain on their bullpen. The recent return of Kwang-Hyun Kim (LHP, STL) has, at least theoretically, fortified the back of the rotation and also officially demoted Daniel Ponce de Leon (RHP, STL) to a bullpen role. Another major culprit for the team’s pitching struggles has been Carlos Martínez (RHP, STL), who has served as the team’s third starter to this point.
