The Cubs have spent the latest portion of the offseason shoring up their rotation with veteran acquisitions of Trevor Williams (RHP, CHC) and Jake Arrieta (RHP, CHC). That leaves second base as potentially the thinnest position on the team’s depth chart. Ideally, the team would presumably like Nico Hoerner (2B/SS, CHC) to emerge as the clear starter for the club. However, after flying through the minor-league system and impressing in his major-league debut in 2019, Hoerner took a step back in 2020.

Hoerner’s standout skill is his ability to make contact (86 ct%, 41 BPV, .294 xBA), yet he was unable to do so at a particularly impressive level in 2020 (78 ct%). The rest of his profile also suffered (29 PX, .230 xBA, -11 BPV),...
