In what seems like a repeat of 2022, the primary area of intrigue in the Cardinals’ lineup is in the outfield. Lars Nootbaar (OF, STL) had a mini-breakout for the team in the second half and seemingly has to get the chance to maintain a regular spot in the lineup to begin 2023. In what would have been an unthinkable scenario entering last season, Nootbaar may have the most secure playing time of any outfielder in St. Louis. The biggest question for him during spring training and heading into Opening Day is likely to be whether he can supplant Tommy Edman (2B/SS, STL) for the leadoff spot in the batting order.
