Core surgery puts Mitch Haniger (OF, SEA) out for until at least early May, possibly much longer—and leaves the outfield playing time tentative entering Opening Day. Mallex Smith (OF, SEA) will be in CF then, but with a lot to prove. Following an elbow injury that shelved him for most of spring training, Smith's game fell apart early on both sides of the ball in 2019, to the point where he was sent back to AAA-Tacoma to regroup at the end of April. Smith's elite speed/running game (a league-leading 46 SB last year) is fine, and his glove has been historically better than he showed last season.
