Before being scratched from a July 29 rehabilitation game with back tightness, Kevin Kiermaier (OF, TAM) looked like he was on the fast track to return from the disabled list the first day he is eligible, Aug. 9.

If Kiermaier’s return is delayed, that may give Mallex Smith (OF, TAM) an opportunity to make a renewed case for playing time. Over the past two weeks, Smith has been in a slump (6-for-43), though he has still managed to steal four bases.

As things now stand, the Rays’ acquisition of Lucas Duda (DH, TAM) indirectly threatens Smith. As noted by Playing Time Today analyst Matt Dodge in the immediate aftermath of the Duda trade, the Rays are now flush with left-handed bats, and ones that offer considerably more...
