A moribund Red Sox offense got a jolt when the team decided to call up Jarren Duran (OF, BOS) on May 6.

Duran was immediately inserted into the Boston lineup in the leadoff spot for the team’s game against the White Sox.

Duran had been off to a red-hot start at AAA-Worcester, with a .397/.478/.638 slash line built on two home runs and eight extra-base hits in 15 games, which he complemented with seven stolen bases on eight attempts.

Perhaps even more encouragingly, Duran’s plate skills at the Triple-A level had shown improvement from 2021, his contact rate rising from 73% to 78% and his walk rate ticking up from 11% to 13%, albeit in a small sample of 67 plate appearances.

Given how poorly Duran’s major league debut went...
