DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: NL East—What's up with Halladay?

Something is clearly amiss with Roy Halladay (RHP, PHI) right now. Shoulder issues bothered him for much of last season as his average fastball velocity dropped from 92 mph in 2011 to 90.6 mph and down to 89.6 mph so far this season. He seems to have lowered his arm angle just a bit, possibly to take some pressure off of his shoulder. It is also interesting to note changes in his pitch mix as he has thrown his fastball and cutter less (down 10.6% combined from 2012) while relying more heavily on his curve ball and split finger. If an injury isn’t to blame, the 36-year-old could adjust and still succeed to some extent. However, it is prudent to take a look at the team’s other options just in case he winds up needing...
