Mark Melancon (RHP, BOS) lived a nightmare against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night, allowing a walk, a double, and three home runs without recording an out. For the season, Melancon has now allowed 11 ER in only two innings, for a 49.50 ERA. He has taken two losses and was removed from the set-up role in the season's first week. Melancon has options remaining, and on Wednesday he was sent to AAA-Pawtucket in an effort to let him straighten out his mechanics and clear his head. How does his demotion affect the Red Sox pen?

Each year some players have hot starts, and during the first few weeks of free agent bidding/waiver pickups we have to make decisions about how aggressively to chase these players. At Baseball HQ we consistently counsel owners to have patience and not make decisions on small sample sizes. This article focuses on potential free agents who had a "hot start" in one of the 5x5 offensive categories during the 2009-2011 seasons, and examines the results of investments in those free agents.

After spending Opening Day on the bench, Juan Pierre (OF, PHI) has since started five of the six games in which the Phillies have faced a right-handed starting pitcher. Just two years ago, Pierre swiped 68 bases and had an SBO of 43%, though those numbers dipped dramatically last year. He was successful on just 27 of his 44 stolen base attempts (61%), and had a 27% SBO. It's unrealistic to expect a full rebound for Pierre, now 34 years old, but he could still be a strong speed source, and has already stolen two bases this year.

[FREE] While the big news in LA this past offseason was the signing of some first baseman who’s supposed to be good, the Angels also solidified their starting rotation by signing C.J. Wilson (LHP, LAA). In his first two years as a starter, Wilson won 31 games and led the Rangers to consecutive World Series appearances.

Someday, someone will come up with a good reason why fantasy players feel remorse after their drafts. We don’t mean anecdotal evidence but some hard studies. After Draft Day many fantasy players feel the reverse of the Endowment Effect, where instead of overvaluing what they own they undervalue it. The more experienced fantasy owner falls prey to this less often than the tyro, but doubt still creeps into their psyches. After that first 1-10, they start to have doubts. When Tim Lincecum gets hammered the doubts strengthen. And then, one blown save and panic sets in. We are here to help.
