STARTERS: Pitch movement, pt. 2

We last looked at pitch movement in this off-season column. A recap of our findings:

  • Pitch movement by itself is not strongly correlated with indicators like Dom (k/9) or Ctl (bb/9) rate.
  • Fastball vertical movement has the strongest positive correlation with Dom, and it's far from strong (r=0.33).
  • One would think that vertical movement of sliders would have a positive correlation with Dom, but there is no correlation between the two (r=0.02).
  • SP whose pitch movement increased from 2011 to 2012 posted an average 6.8 Dom that season. Their average Dom in 2011 was also 6.8.
  • SP with increased pitch movement from 2011 to 2012 maintained the same Ctl (2.7) as they had in 2011.
  • Those whose pitch movement decreased in 2012...
