Pitching matchup: LHP Matthew Boyd (6-9, 4.38 ERA) vs. RHP Trevor Richards (3-12. 4.50 ERA)
Setup and context: Detroit was well-buried at 37-85 entering this game. Tampa sat 9.5 GB of New York in the AL East, but were already locked into the wild-card battle (which they would eventually secure). Notably, the teams had played a 13-inning contest the night before; so one of the pre-game storylines was both teams hoping for length from their starters to save the already-taxed bullpens.
