At the major-league level, a prime pitching matchup—where two ace-level starters square off against each other—is not that rare. It often happens on Opening Day, of course, but then also at various times throughout the season. For instance, on the same night of the minor league game below, Clayton Kershaw battled Madison Bumgarner.
But on the minor-league side, matchups between top prospects are unusual—top pitchers in each organization may be on different levels of the minor-league ladder. More often than not, when one goes to scout a top minor-league pitching prospect, his mound opponent has only marginal credentials.
