The White Sox promoted the 27-year-old backstop after placing Alex Avila on the disabled list. The right-handed hitting Smith will serve as a backup to Dioner Navarro, but could get 2-3 starts per week. He is a big, strong and durable catcher who was selected by the White Sox in the seventh round of the 2011 draft. Despite his large frame, he has solid athleticism.
