DR. HQ: Preseason Report: Second Basemen

In a lot of ways baseball is a game of cycles, including injuries. Right now we are dealing with few familiar names dealing with injury situations at second base. There have been years where this position has been deluged with injuries, but not this year. Enjoy the “down cycle” while it lasts.

Chase Utley (2B, PHI)
The Injury: Patellar tendinitis in his right knee. His troubles can be traced back to spring training of last year.
The Outlook: Utley managed to play in 103 games last season and considering how dire it looked last March, that is an accomplishment. He was unable to build up his leg strength during the year but was finally able to address the issue over the winter. He came to camp in good shape.
