Kemp picked a fight with an outfield wall last August and lost. He needed surgery, but Kemp and the Dodgers did not think the damage was extensive. But when the doctors operated October 5, 2012, they ended up having to reattach the labrum to part of the bone for what they thought was a simple cleanup procedure. The diagnostic tests—as good as they are—are not perfect. His MRI did not reveal all of the damage.
After the surgery, the Dodgers pointed to the quick and successful recovery of teammates Adrián González and Hanley Ramírez.
