PT TOMORROW: NL East—Will ATL soon promote OF Mallex Smith?

We wrote last week about the crowded outfield situation in Atlanta. It’s possible that yet another name could soon be added to the mix—the team could opt to promote Mallex Smith (OF, ATL) on September 1.

Smith, who came over in the off-season trade that sent Justin Upton (OF, SD) to the Padres, opened 2015 with Double-A Mississippi and got off to a terrific start, slashing .340/.418/.413 with 2 HR and 23 SB in 241 PA. That earned him a promotion to Triple-A Gwinnett on June 24. It took the 22-year-old speedster some time to get acclimated (.240/.290/.330 slash line in 100 July AB), but he has been on a tear so far this month, posting a .348/.386/.424 slash line with 11 SB in 66 AB.
