The new regime in Flushing worked hard this offseason to address the lack of SP depth in the upper minors. The Mets now have a plethora of 5th starter options to take the hill at AAA-Syracuse. But before they get sent upstate, they’ll compete in spring training for a spot on the big club.
David Peterson (LHP, NYM) is the incumbent, coming off a rookie campaign full of shiny surface stats: 6 W, 3.44 ERA, 1.21 WHIP. Although he’s the favorite to take the last spot right now, bear in mind that Peterson’s 2020 line wasn't supported by the skills (4.93 xERA, 8% K-BB%).
