The Marlins have several SP with decent upside currently locked into the rotation. Caleb Smith (LHP, MIA) heads up the staff after setting a career high with 153 IP. As noted in the 2020 Baseball Forecaster, he was flashing ace potential in his first 12 starts (3.41 ERA, 3.85 xFIP, 22 BB, 82 K in 66 IP) before missing 30 days on the IL due to hip inflammation. After that, he was out of whack the rest of the season: 5.36 ERA, 5.98 xFIP, 40 BB, 80 K in 87 IP. If healthy, the possibilities that Smith could build upon those first two months are exciting indeed, but that “if” looms particularly large for him given the 144 days he’s spent on the IL over the past three seasons.
