PT TOMORROW: NL Central—Wainwright’s rotation footing on shaky ground

St. Louis Cardinals

Adam Wainwright (RHP, STL) will soon return to the Cardinals rotation today for what will be his first start since April 17. As previously covered in this space, Wainwright’s hold on a rotation spot is shaky. Perhaps the elbow inflammation that has sidelined him for the past few weeks was the cause of his early wildness (53% and 4.6 Ctl in 16 IP), but it may well prove to be just another step in his decline and one that leads to his transition to long relief.

His missed turns in the rotation have been covered by John Gant (RHP, STL) and Jack Flaherty (RHP, STL). Flaherty still looks to be the long-term replacement option if Wainwright proves ineffective and he'll likely be the immediate fill-in for Carlos Martínez...
