Though it’s not clear how long Jack Flaherty (RHP, STL) will be sidelined, he’s already been ruled out for Opening Day. That puts a lot of pressure on a Cardinals’ rotation that is currently a weak spot on a team otherwise capable of contending in a poor division. In Flaherty’s absence, Adam Wainwright (RHP, STL) and Steven Matz (LHP, STL) take over as the de facto aces. Matz showed the ability to limit home runs (1.1 HR/9 in 2021, career 1.4) for the first time in his career in 2021, and he will now head to a park that is among the best in the league in suppressing the long ball. Meanwhile, Wainwright clearly showed that he can still be successful (103 BPV in 2021, $26 in 5X5) at an advanced age.
