PT TOMORROW: AL East—Bump in road for Boxberger?

Tampa Bay Rays

Only time will tell if an ugly July 7 outing (1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 ER) will merely be a bump in the road or a harbinger of a role change for Brad Boxberger (RHP, TAM). Boxberger said he believed he had slipped into tipping his pitches, a flaw he has since corrected, a theory that his clean saves on July 11 and July 12 support.

In fact, one might be inclined to pay that July 7 outing no mind whatsoever, were it not for the stellar performance of Jake McGee (LHP, TAM), whose only earned runs of the year came a month-and-a-half ago (May 26). McGee finished 2014 as the team’s closer and seems more than capable of doing so again (.169 OBA, 221 BPV, 2.31 xERA), should the need arise.
