The brilliant Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk depicts the still-astonishing evacuation of over 300,000 Allied troops facing certain defeat by advancing German forces. It is a cinematic masterpiece, made all the more poignant by the true story of the largest sea evacuation in history. What really puts it over the top as a World War II film is that it depicts the heroism and importance of a defeat—at least on paper—marked by a critical preservation of forces that eventually contributed meaningfully to an ultimate victory.
