This is Part 2 of our investigation of the changing power balance between hitting and starting pitching in recent seasons. In Part 1, we documented several shifts in the player pool configuration in recent seasons:

  • The number of hitters producing large HR numbers has declined, while the number of pitchers posting competitive ERAs has increased.
  • The number of highly-skilled, low-risk (Tier 1) hitters has dropped significantly while the number of Tier 1 starting pitchers has been growing.
