ALTERNATIVE: Building a winning Strat team—2013 pitchers

This week we look at pitching tiers based on Strat-O-Matic ratings for 2012. Let’s start with some basic assumptions.

  1. All things being equal, we prefer right-handers to southpaws. With fewer lefties in the majors, hitters receive fewer at-bats against them. This creates smaller sample sizes and more frequent anomalies. It’s easy for a poor hitter to put up big numbers against portsiders. Most simulation managers can more easily develop a lineup or pinch hitter against left-handers than against righties.
  2. Seek pitchers who are equally effective against both right- and left-handed hitters. If a pitcher dominates only one type of hitter, their weakness against the other can be easily exploited by loading a lineup with that type of...
