ALTERNATIVE: 2017 Simulation draft pool analysis

This dead time of year represents “prime time” for simulation gamers. Before Rotisserie drafts get in full swing during spring training, simulation leagues like Strat-O-Matic, Diamond Mind, and APBA evaluate 2016 performances to formulate their teams. They look at the statistical breakdowns of their players (nearly all sim formats feature keepers) and draft non-rostered players onto their squads. With a few early drafts complete or in progress, let’s look at how the draft pool shakes out in 2017.

Before we start, a couple standard assumptions. We will assume 50 at-bats or 30 innings pitched makes a player draft-eligible, and we will assume a 20-team league. Always remember, a draft pool seems deep until 18 to 30 teams start picking out...
