STARTERS: PQS Trends & Targets

The Pure Quality Start (PQS) method is a tool to analyze the skills posted by starting pitchers in each game they pitch. It differs from the traditional Quality Start method because it focuses on a SP's skills instead of surface stats such as earned runs.

Using this method, starts are assigned a score based on criteria that you can find in the PQS section of our glossary.

Those that measure a PQS-4/5 are dominant (DOM) starts, whereas outings that rate as a PQS-0/1 are disastrous (DIS) starts.

For your reference, here is a historical breakdown of average PQS DOM and DIS percentages by league for the last three years:

  • PQS DOM/DIS% Baselines: 2010-12

          ----AL---- | ----NL---- | ----MLB---
    Year  DOM%  DIS% | DOM%  DIS% |...
