STARTERS: BPV none on/runners on

Let's continue our one-split-away series by looking at the skills of starting pitchers in two scenarios: with the bases empty and with runners on base.

In 2013, we set some three-year skill baselines for these two scenarios. Our findings confirmed the reason that we have discussed this split in this space for many years: there are drastic skill splits when pitchers throw with the bases empty vs. with runners on base.

Here is an updated look at those differences over the last four years:

  • BPV - Bases Empty*

    Year  League  Ctl  Dom  HR/9  GB%  |  H%   hr/f  |  BPV
    ====  ======  ===  ===  ====  ===  |  ===  ====  |  ===
    2010      AL  3.1  7.4   1.1  44%  |  31%   10%  |   71
    2011      AL  3.0  7.5   1.1  44%  |  31%   10%  |   76
