MINORS: 2017 Rule 5 Draft recap

The 2017 MLB Winter Meetings (full coverage here) concluded this week with the annual Rule 5 Draft. A quick refresher: There are two phases in the draft—the major league phase (which we’ll cover here), along with a Triple-A phase.

In almost all cases, players have four years from the time they were signed to their first professional contract before they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Once a team places a player on its 40-man roster, that player is protected.

Clubs select in reverse order of standings from the preceding season; each club may select as many players as it so chooses until it reaches the 40-man roster limit. The catch is that players selected in the Rule 5 Draft must remain on a club’s...
