The White Sox promoted the 27-year-old backstop after placing Alex Avila on the disabled list. The right-handed hitting Smith will serve as a backup to Dioner Navarro, but could get 2-3 starts per week. He is a big, strong and durable catcher who was selected by the White Sox in the seventh round of the 2011 draft. Despite his large frame, he has solid athleticism. His glove is ahead of his bat at this point and has a strong, accurate arm with a quick transfer. Smith isn’t the most agile catcher, but he moves OK and is known as a good framer. From a hitting...
