SPECULATOR: Sparks are flying

In past years, we have called this exercise "Skills on the bench." Essentially, it's a search for players who currently lack full-time roles, and might be poised to not only gain a larger playing-time share, but who have the requisite skills to turn that opportunity into value.

We could also call this exercise "Searching for the next Domonic Brown." You might remember what he was doing at this time last year:

2013    AB   HR   RBI   BA
=====  ===   ==   ===  ====
April   86    3    11  .233
May    109   12    25  .303

Of course, Brown didn't exactly sustain that breakout through the full 2013 season, but that's ok. If you had him for that May explosion last year, you got plenty of mileage out of it.
