SPECULATOR: Early hidden injuries, 2022

May 5, 2021.

Pete Alonso (1B, NYM) gets drilled by a 95 mph fastball from Johan Oviedo (apologies in advance for the annoying MLB ad... and for Pete's language if your sound is on!):

Alonso played through the injury for another two weeks before eventually hitting IL for the rest of May. The rest, as they say, is histor... described in the Baseball Forecaster:

Played through May hand sprain that sent him to IL; came back with a vengeance (.270 BA, 31 HR after 5/31 return). Post- IL power skills (PX/xPX, xHR/F) snapped right back to rookie-season levels, while ct% uptick fueled 2nd half xBA gains. The ceiling is already sky-high (think 2019 plus a few more hits); the floor is catching up as track record grows.

Alonso's case isn't...

Almost!

Sure, they struggled last year, but if we remove some recency bias, granting mulligans could be a lucrative exercise.
