GM's OFFICE: The Pitching Era and PQS

Among the many tools here at BaseballHQ.com, our Pure Quality Start (PQS) indicator can sometimes get lost in the shuffle.  It has a long history—the initial research appeared in the 2002 edition of the Baseball Forecaster, and it’s been a staple of the site and the book in the 13 years since. 

While PQS plays a big part in our HQ Pitcher Matchups Tool, I can’t help but get the feeling that it’s generally under-utilized. Sure, we have a sense of DOM/DIS scores, which help us form a sense of just what type of starting pitcher we have here, but when one stumbles onto its deeper features like rolling 5-start averages and qERA, you remember just how powerful the tool is.
