THE BIG HURT: Looking beyond Health scores

BaseballHQ.com health scores are a very good approximation of player injury risk. However, they are backward-looking and based primarily on days spent on the DL in previous seasons. As such, they sometimes don't fully incorporate the subtleties of unique injuries and elevated risks that haven't been reflected in DL stays. They also sometimes overstate risk based on fluke injuries that aren't likely to repeat.

We'll tackle several of those cases, focusing on higher-value players. The goal is to help you identify risks that you might not otherwise be aware of, or to qualify the actual risks for ostensibly risky players. As such, we will not discuss obvious risks—for example, a 38-year old player with an A health score (we assume everyone...
