Auditions for the Red Sox second base job in 2021 shifted into a new phase when the team optioned José Peraza (2B, BOS) to its alternate site on September 10. After a good first week, Peraza had posted a .585 OPS over his next 99 plate appearances for Boston and will almost certainly be non-tendered this offseason.

While the Red Sox could certainly bring a new second baseman from outside the organization — even as they continue to pay Dustin Pedroia (2B, BOS) for one more season — they may well choose not to do so, given the expectation that Jeter Downs (2B, BOS) may well make his major league debut at some point next season.

Downs did not have the benefit of a minor league season in 2020 but has been part of the Red Sox...
